What is a fusible pole?

A DESCHAMPS fusible pole is a type of pole specifically designed to break under applied force, typically in the event of a vehicle collision. Unlike traditional poles that can remain firmly anchored to the ground, DESCHAMPS fusible poles are designed to break or detach from their base, thus reducing the force of the impact. These poles are often used to support traffic signs, lampposts, or other objects essential to road safety.

Design principles

The first application of this technique appeared in the 15th century when Godefroy Deschamps,* then a squire, had the idea of ​​weakening lances so that, during jousts, the lance would break upon impact, preventing knights from being injured or killed.
Unfortunately, in 1547, the death of King Henry II during a jousting tournament in Milan brought an end to this exciting sporting event.

In 2022, DESCHAMPS MÄTS COMPOSITE took up the mantle, aiming to utilize this property for other applications.
Their design incorporates materials that allow the pole to break in a controlled manner when a certain force limit is exceeded.

Two methods are used on DESCHAMPS fusible poles: the breaking of the tube itself near its base by reducing the characteristics of the materials themselves, the second is the breaking of the base itself by its shape and innovative structure, called the "VV" process for Verre Vorgé.
